Can you debloat an LG TV?
The AI-assisted tools that clean up Android TVs need ADB. LG TVs run webOS, which has no equivalent: built-in apps can be hidden but not removed. Here is what Developer Mode and the homebrew scene really offer, and where the useful work happens instead.

Why the Android tools stop at LG
cleanyourtv states that it will not work on LG webOS; its only LG entry is a launcher port installed through Developer Mode. dumbtv’s notes on other TVs say that Developer Mode gives no shell and no way to disable preinstalled apps, and that on an up-to-date set you should assume no root.
What Developer Mode does
LG’s Developer Mode is meant for building and testing your own apps. A session lasts a limited time: when it expires, the apps you installed are removed, and it can only be extended before it runs out. It does not touch the apps that came with the TV.
Homebrew and root
The Homebrew Channel describes itself as an unofficial app store for webOS with tools for rooted TVs. With root it can switch off some telemetry, but it also opens remote access to the TV, including a telnet service without authentication.
The public root methods are being closed. According to the webOS Homebrew project, RootMyTV has been patched since 2022 and crashd since April 2024; the faultmanager project wrote in August 2025 that the latest firmware for most models is patched, and that among 2025 models only the factory firmware 10.0 was still open. The projects themselves warn that the TV can be left unusable. We do not recommend it.
What you can do instead
On an LG TV the useful work happens in three places.
- The settings: turn off Live Plus, withdraw the viewing information agreements and limit ad tracking (see the guide on turning off ACR).
- The app list: hide the preinstalled apps you do not use. LG has said it will let owners remove the Copilot icon, without a date.
- The network: keep the TV away from your other devices and decide what it can reach from outside.
We'll tell you when the Kickstarter opens
We only write about the Kickstarter launch: three emails at most. Leave with one click.
We keep your email, your language, the page you sign up from and your TV if you write it, on our own server and only to tell you about the launch. Questions
Can I uninstall LG Channels or Copilot?
Not with the TV’s own tools: default apps can only be hidden. LG has said it will let owners delete the Copilot icon, without giving a date.
Will the AI debloat tools for Android TV work on LG?
No. Their authors say so: they rely on ADB, which webOS does not have.
Is rooting an LG TV worth it?
For most people, no. The methods are being patched, they only work on older firmware, and the root tools open remote access to the TV. The projects warn that the TV can be left unusable.
