Can you debloat a Fire TV?
Fire TV Sticks, the Fire TV Cube and Fire TV smart TVs run Fire OS, Amazon’s version of Android, so the tools that clean up Android TVs work here too, up to a point. Amazon protects its home screen and some of its own apps, has closed the workarounds for replacing Home one update at a time, and its newest Sticks run Vega OS, which is not Android at all.

Step by step
Fire TV privacy settings
From Amazon’s privacy FAQ. On the New Fire TV Experience Amazon describes Preferences only in general terms, so the entries may be arranged differently.
- Turn off Device Usage Data.
- Turn off Collect App Usage Data.
- Turn off Interest-based Ads.
- Open Your Advertising ID: Amazon’s policy says you can reset it or opt out.
- On a Fire TV smart TV, also turn off the collection of over-the-air viewing data, in the same Privacy Settings.
The way back: factory reset
It removes your account information and downloaded content, in-app purchases included. Check the privacy settings again afterwards.
- On a Fire TV Stick or Cube.
- On a Fire TV smart TV.
Menus change with TV updates: if a label does not match, look for the closest entry in the same section.
What ADB can do on Fire OS
Amazon documents ADB Debugging under Developer Options. Since a June 2022 update the Developer Options entry is hidden; it comes back after you select the device name in About several times. Since early 2024, apps running on the Fire TV can no longer open an ADB connection to it, so a computer or a phone has to do the work, and two of TechDoctorUK’s on-device utility apps were pulled from the Appstore.
The published tools disable Amazon packages for your user and never uninstall them. Amazon refuses some outright, with a security exception that says the package is protected, and the protected list changes between Fire OS builds. The home screen is one of them, and Fire OS ignores an attempt to set a different one. The large rotating banner at the top of Home stays whatever you disable, because Amazon’s home screen feeds it.
Amazon closes the side doors
Updates in February 2022 broke the trick that let a replacement launcher take over Home. In March 2023 Amazon blacklisted Launcher Manager, and apps that replace the home screen now carry a potentially harmful notice. In April 2024 Launcher Manager Mini made it possible again, but only with permissions granted from a computer. Since late 2025 Amazon also blocks sideloaded apps it identifies as giving access to unlicensed content; other sideloading continues.
Fire OS updates re-enable packages and reset settings, according to dumbtv and cleanyourtv, and tv-tweak advises checking again after each update; a few disabled packages turn themselves back on at every boot. Amazon says the autoplay switches for featured content on the home screen are in Settings, Preferences, and SlashGear warns that an update can switch them back on.
Vega OS: nothing to debloat
The Fire TV Stick 4K Select (2025), the Fire TV Stick HD and the third-generation Fire TV Stick 4K (2026) run Vega OS. Amazon says it built Vega on Linux components; apps are written in React Native or web technologies, Android apps do not run on the device, and only Appstore apps can be installed. Vega’s Developer Mode needs an Amazon developer account and installs only your own apps; its shell reaches only a temporary folder, and a factory reset turns it off.
We found no published way to disable Amazon’s apps on Vega, and cleanyourtv says the 4K Select cannot be debloated over ADB. The Cube and the Fire TV smart TVs still run Fire OS.
The tools
TechCrunch covered two of them in October 2026. dumbtv, run by an AI agent, disables about fifty Amazon packages, limits ad tracking, turns off autoplay, shows its own home screen through an accessibility service and runs a DNS filter on the TV that also blocks Amazon’s update servers. cleanyourtv only debloats on Fire TV, because Fire OS will not hand Home to another launcher; it has example lists for several Sticks and for Hisense, Insignia, TCL and Toshiba Fire TV sets. tv-tweak is a plain script with a verified profile for the Fire TV Stick 4K Max. None of them works on Vega.
Amazon says its privacy settings are specific to each device, and on some devices they can also be managed from your Amazon account online. cleanyourtv says they follow the account. Check them on each device. Data Monitoring is not a privacy switch: it tracks your own data use.
What can go wrong
From the tools’ documentation and the press:
- Disabling com.amazon.vizzini covers the screen with Unable to Detect Your Remote.
- com.amazon.firebat is Prime Video: generic lists that disable it break playback.
- Uninstalling system packages, instead of disabling them, is the way to break the Home button or lose HDMI input switching, It’s FOSS warns.
- Turning off the updater stops security fixes too.
- ADB over the network is unencrypted and stays open until you turn debugging off.
- An AI agent can disable the wrong package: TechCrunch reports one owner stuck halfway through a Fire TV. The realistic worst case, dumbtv says, is a TV that boots to Amazon’s home, and a factory reset is usually the way back.

Questions
Can I remove the ads from the Fire TV home screen?
Not by debloating. Amazon protects its home screen, Fire OS ignores a different one, and the banner at the top is fed by Amazon’s home. Replacement launchers have been blocked one update after another; Launcher Manager Mini, released in April 2024, needs permissions granted from a computer.
Can I debloat a Fire TV Stick 4K Select?
We found no published way. It runs Vega OS, which is not Android: no ADB, no Android apps and no way to install apps from outside the Appstore.
Do Fire OS updates undo debloating?
Often. The tools report that updates re-enable packages and reset settings, and a few packages come back at every boot. Check again after each update.
Do Amazon’s privacy settings follow my account?
Amazon says they are specific to each device, and some devices can also be managed online from your Amazon account. Set them on each Fire TV.
