Can you debloat a TCL TV?

TCL sells TVs with three systems: Google TV, and Android TV on older models; Roku TV in the US; and, also in the US, Fire TV. Only the first can be cleaned from the inside, and even there TCL itself says you can’t turn off ads entirely. Here is what the menus offer on each, what debloating really does on a TCL, and what it has broken for others.

Step by step

TCL Google TV

Paths from TCL and Google support pages for US models; European models may use different names.

  1. Choose your Google profile and turn on Apps Only Mode. Personalised recommendations go; sponsored content and teasers stay.SettingsAccounts & Sign In
  2. Start on the last input instead of the home screen when you switch the TV on.SettingsSystemPower & EnergyPower On BehaviorLast Input Used
  3. Delete the advertising ID.SettingsPrivacyAdsDelete Advertising ID
  4. Pick an app and turn off its notifications, so it stops pushing to the top row.SettingsApps
  5. Uninstall the apps you downloaded. Preinstalled apps are not listed here.SettingsAppsDownloaded apps
  6. To hide a featured banner, hold Select on it and choose Hide. Google says it stays hidden for at least 18 months.

TCL Roku TV

For content recognition on Roku TV models, see the guide on turning off ACR on a TCL TV.

  1. Show or hide the recommendation rows and Quick Access.SettingsHome Screen
  2. Limit sensitive ad content. It applies only to banner ads in the menus and the screensaver.SettingsPrivacyAdvertisingSensitive ad content
  3. Remove an app: highlight it on Home, press the * button and choose Remove app. It is removed from every device on your Roku account.

Menus change with TV updates: if a label does not match, look for the closest entry in the same section.

Three systems, three answers

Google TV is TCL’s main line, and older models run Android TV: these are the ones the debloat tools can reach. TCL Roku TVs, still supported in the US, have no such door. TCL also sells Fire TV models in the US, from the S and Q series to the QM64L of April 2026, TCL’s first Mini-LED Fire TV: for those, see the Fire TV guide. Sets sold in China run TCL’s own Android build, with limits of their own.

What ADB does on a TCL

Neither TCL nor Google documents Developer options for TCL TVs, but owners report them working on many models: cleanyourtv lists 69 tested TCL sets, and on a 2024 QM7 network ADB answered once the owner accepted the computer on the TV. Some sets for the Chinese market have only an ADB switch and refuse to install anything, and some refuse any replacement launcher.

Over ADB an app can be disabled, which is easily undone, or uninstalled for your user. Neither removes it from the system or frees storage. The current tools disable; older TCL scripts uninstall, or do both.

TCL says a factory reset returns the TV to its out-of-box state; the debloat tools confirm that every disabled package comes back with it. In cleanyourtv’s experience a software update installs over the cleaned-up system: the listed packages return, Home goes back to the stock launcher and new preloaded apps appear. Some firmware re-enables packages on its own.

TCL’s own apps, and the ads on Home

TCL does not describe its preinstalled apps. What is known comes from community lists: TCLtv+, the free channels with ads that replaced TCL Channel on US and Canadian Google TV sets in 2023, packages that push TCL content to the home screen at boot, a message box for promotions, and installers that add partner apps without asking. These are the communities’ descriptions, not TCL’s.

The lists do not always agree. cleanyourtv says one TCL package hosts Samba TV content recognition and TCL analytics and switches it off; dumbtv keeps it, because it also hosts the TV’s update screen.

On 13 May 2026 Nexxen announced that the native ad space on the home screen of TCL Android TV devices can be bought programmatically worldwide, through Nexxen alone in the US and Canada. That is the company’s own announcement.

What can go wrong

From the tools’ own reports:

  • On a TCL G08 set, disabling three TCL setup and configuration packages together dropped the Wi-Fi outright; the owner had to reconnect over ADB to get back in.
  • The lists contradict each other, and one older script removes two packages that its own README rates critical.
  • After a list was applied to a QM7, phones and a PC could no longer see the TV for casting.
  • Replacing the launcher on Google TV: the setup wizard can take over Home and crash-loop the system, disabling it deletes the Wi-Fi saved during setup, and the settings and YouTube buttons stop working.
  • A wrong list can remove the input switcher or the settings app, and a boot loop cannot be ruled out. One owner bricked an Android TV.
  • Android Authority warns that changing the TV’s software voids the warranty, and that tools written quickly with AI may be weak on security.

The tools

The debloat-tcl-android-tv that people search for is chrissy-dev’s debloat-tlc-android-tv, with a typo in the name: a script that uninstalls a fixed list and reboots, archived in March 2025. robinlennox’s tcl-debloat (last updated in 2023) mixes uninstalling and disabling. android-tv-debloat-toolkit is a Windows app with a safe mode and risk ratings, no longer actively maintained. cleanyourtv, which TechCrunch covered in October 2026, disables after a backup and keeps a restore script; dumbtv’s scripts are for Fire OS, with one TCL report done by hand. tv-tweak has no TCL profile.

Questions

What is debloat-tcl-android-tv?

Most likely chrissy-dev’s debloat-tlc-android-tv on GitHub, with a typo in the name. It uninstalls a fixed list for your user and reboots, and it was archived in March 2025.

Can I debloat a TCL Roku TV?

No. Roku’s developer mode installs one app of your own at a time, and Roku’s control interface has no command to disable or remove anything. You can remove apps and hide rows from the menus.

Will a TCL software update undo debloating?

Often. Updates install over the cleaned-up system and bring the listed packages back, and some firmware re-enables packages on its own. A factory reset brings everything back.

Can I turn off all the ads on a TCL Google TV?

No. TCL says you can’t turn off ads entirely. Apps Only Mode, the power-on setting and hiding banners reduce them.
